Nintendo Switch Contest - How to Enter
What’s better than a Switch? A custom Switch!
What’s happening? Sugar is giving away a Nintendo Switch to one very deserving fan!
Why? The giveaway is to show Sugar’s appreciation for the most loyal and dedicated of her fans!
Who can enter? Anyone who’s a fan!* You don’t need to be an active, well known community member. You just need to be a fan!
How is the winner chosen? This is not a random raffle. Each person who enters will submit a written letter, and the best letter wins.
What’s actually being given away?
The winner of this contest will receive a Nintendo Switch Lite (32 GB) in retail packaging with a custom Candy or Elizabeth decal pre-applied, a SanDisk 400 GB MicroSD card new in retail packaging, a 50 pack of Torbeth stickers, and a 50 pack of invinciblesugar.com stickers.
The winner can choose if they want a Candy or Elizabeth themed console. The Candy theme will come on a Turquoise colored Switch Lite, while the Elizabeth theme will come on a Yellow colored Switch Lite. The artwork itself will be brand new, a one time joint piece made by all 4 of the currently hired webcomic artists.
The artwork will only ever appear on this one Switch. Even if a future contest occurs and that winner opts for the same character. The only way non-winners/the general public will get to see this artwork is in photos of the Switch. The digital assets will not be posted or reused. The system will also be digitally signed on the back by the artists. (Sharpie would be better but they all live in different countries)
I wanna win! What do I need to do?
Great! To enter, you’ll need to write a letter. The winner will not be random; the best letter wins. There is no secret formula to write the best letter, but here are some tips on do’s and don’ts:
Good Ideas:
Talk about why you like the character you choose (Candy or Elizabeth). What about them do you like?
Talk about why you want the Switch! What games would you play?
Talk about your interest in the Candy universe as a whole! What other characters do you like? If you voted in the FASP then who did you vote for, and why?
Bad Ideas:
Talk of your inability to afford a Switch. While I sympathize, that is irrelevant. The contest is to show appreciation for the fans. It’s not a charity event and your personal income is not a factor.
Openly admitting to a desire to “flip” the Switch, or trade it in for another system. While I can not control what you do with the Switch after you win I will try my best to avoid that situation. I hope it doesn’t end up on eBay! That would kill any chance of a similar contest in the future.
Mentioning anything about who you are. Any indication, any at all, to who you are will result in your letter being removed from consideration.
There is no requirement for length. Your letter can be half a page, or 10 pages. While the page does need to be in English it does not need to be written in proper English. Proper punctuation and good grammar are appreciated but not required, especially if English is a second language for you. To prevent favoritism each letter will be signed with a random number between 300 and 30,000.
A few other notes for qualifying:
You can enter from any country (and the Nintendo Switch is mostly region free) but keep in mind I am shipping a US Switch from the US.
NO P.O. BOXES! I may be using UPS/FedEx to deliver the package, and they can not deliver to a P.O. box.
Staff and FASP artists do not qualify. If I have hired you for work before you can not enter. Discord Mods can enter though, since they are volunteers not staff.
The package shipping label must have your real name, or a legal alias you can receive mail under. I won’t know if you use a real name, but I won’t send the package to “Hugh Jurection” or “Dick Cummings”, or Discord usernames like “GoodGirl69”. It needs to at least pass to the mail carrier as a real name.
I will cover shipping costs and the costs for the Switch package, but any import duties, VAT or tax that your government imposes is on you to know about and pay.
What other details should I know?
You can start drafting your letter now, but you won’t be able to submit until December 1st. Submissions will be accepted from December 1st to December 4th. Any letters submitted after 00:00 MST (UTC -7) on December 5th will not count.
As mentioned above, each letter is signed anonymously. Use the link here to generate a random number and use that in the signature field on the submission page. There probably won’t be any two letters with the same signature, but just to be safe check this page BEFORE you submit. There will be a list of already used numbers. If two or more letters have the same random number only the first recieved will count. You can re-submit your letter with a new number (before the deadline) if needed. Always use a NEW random number for a re-submission.
Do not include your address in the letter. If you win you will give your information at that time.
OK! I’ve written my letter! Where/how do I submit?
Bookmark this web page. Come back on December 1st and you’ll see it will be updated with something that looks like this:
Once that submit form is here you can send in your letter! Keep in mind that you can not send a document or file this way. You’ll need to copy paste the text. Please use paragraphs! It’s not required but, if I am having trouble reading your letter because it’s one huge wall of text then that’s not exactly putting your letter in the best light!
Remember to check the list below the form of used signatures! If you get the same random number from the link you’ll need to click “Again!” on the page to get a new one!
How will the winner be announced?
I will post the winning letter’s signature on Discord and Twitter. Along with that post I will ask whoever has that winning signature to DM me. In Discord/Twitter DMs we will discuss details. I’ll ask you a few things to verify that it’s really your letter, then we will work out shipping!
I will need some time to review the letters, depending on how many people apply I may have a winner as early as December 6th, but it may take me longer. Make sure you save your signature somewhere! Without it you can not claim your prize! I also recommend you keep a copy of the full letter somewhere safe.
Once the winner is chosen and the character (Candy or Elizabeth) is picked the Switch will be ordered and the webcomic artists will begin working on the custom artwork for the Switch skin! The artwork is quite expensive for me, and will be one of a kind! I won’t commission the order for the artwork until the winner has picked Candy or Elizabeth.
It will then take a few weeks for the artists to make the drawing, and another week or two for the custom decal company to press the Switch Skin. I am estimating that the finished custom Switch will be ready to ship in mid-January.
I didn’t win! Boo hoo!
I’m sorry that you didn’t win. Writing the letter should have been fun though! There are a few things to keep in mind:
Pictures of the finished Switch with its custom art will be posted on Discord. I’ll post them before I send the unit to the winner, and hopefully they will also post pics when they get it!
If those who do not win are good sports about it then I may do something like this again! There could be a future Switch giveaway. But not if a lot of people throw a fit over it (don’t worry, one or two bad attitudes won’t be enough to stop a future contest, it’s more about community feelings as a whole)
If I receive enough good letters then I might give 1 or 2 smaller prizes as well, such as a free merch pack with magnets and stickers and things. Maybe. Also maybe not, it just depends on community participation.
This is a fairly small community. Don’t opt out of the contest because you fear you might not win. I’d say your odds are pretty good! It’s merit based, so a better letter has better odds of winning, and quite honestly I doubt more than 50 people will even apply.
Show me that boring legal stuff!
Sure! Staff and FASP artists are not eligible to win. If you are under the age of 18 (or whatever age is a legal adult in your country) you MUST have parental permission to submit your letter. If you win you’ll be giving me your address, where you live! Parents need to be OK with that. This is not a random raffle. The winner is based on which letter I feel has the most merit. You don’t need to buy anything to enter. The money used to buy the Switch is my personal money earned at work, it is not in any part from donations I receive for the webcomics. That donated money is strictly for the comics, costs to run this website, etc. Not for contests like this.
I’m not a lawyer. Please don’t sue me. Just have fun with this small, community event!
Although I do not currently plan to release the letters publicly I hold the right to do so at any time if I wish, especially for the winning letter.
